Hi Nathan,
I'm on Trojan day shift for only the last week of the present swing finishing on the 28th of June. It may be common knowledge but the windlass is not quite fully repaired. Windlass is working but needs to be secured properly when Brody has time including cleaning the bilge in the tank rooms. You may need to allocate at least half a day in the marina to properly secure the windless (obviously notifying Dave of any down time of Trojan). Apparently the port side fuel tank sight gauge had been leaking. Shaun has been on maternity leave for over two (2) weeks. Jesse has replaced Luke as head of maintenance. Jesse keeps Luke's phone number but obviously not same Email address. Luke's last day was Friday 24/6. It's probably already common knowledge but all runs with passengers between QC1 and QC4 that take over 20 mins has to be noted in the Ships Log and Daily Trip Log Update giving a reason for example no wash areas or shipping movements etc. Also probably common knowledge is the noticible cavitation at higher RPM possibly from light loads (low passenger numbers) or incorrect propellor pitch as Aaron has suggested. I have noticed once that port side engine was hunting (sudden fluctuation of RPM). Hunting happened at speed, perhaps at 2280 RPM but sorry not confirmed. Hunting stopped when increased speed. Brody noticed one engine might have been 'missing' while we were alongside one day but he couldn't confirm this conclusively. Have had issues with the Samsung tablet losing DataWeb connection or freezing up altogether. Possible to rectify the problem by turning device off then back on again. Attention to heavy condensation early in the morning. Condensation dripping from ceiling of cabin onto device which also affects device if screen is facing upwards. Night shift to check the function of stern light. Apparently it needs a tap every now & then with the boat hook to get it working. Night shift crew had some issues with the operation of the search light. They said the spot light was not turning in the direction the handle was turned. I tested today and it seems to be ok. The only thing is the handle is not in line with the direction the light is pointing. Toilet roll holder keeps coming unstuck off the wall & falls to the floor.
24/6 Friday
Brody on board to do a 200 hr service on the Genset which included oil filter and anode replacement.
Brody also did a 500 hr service on port and starboard main engines which included changing the fuel filters.
Brody also fitted a new toilet exhaust fan.
On the same day Gavin a technician from a company called Modern Marine was onboard and fitted a new Simrad chart chart plotter model NSS9 evo2 (9 inch) to the stbd side of the wheelhouse. Inside the card slot is a micro SD card with charts that are apparently up to date but not confirmed. Gavin also tested the cable from port Simrad radar/plotter to external GPS Antenna & found the cable to faulty (possibly from construction). He said this port unit is using the internal GPS to find the position. Gavin said it should be relatively easy to replace cable to external antenna.
We (crew) in subsequent days have found port Simrad losing a GPS fix occasionally in chart mode. Also this unit is giving a false speed at slow speed, both probably because internal GPS is in use. Finally this plotter does not show AIS targets in chart mode. New stbd plotter/radar shows AIS targets.
Old plotter & large monitor is stored in stbd side hull storage. Brody said he will take to maintenance storage. Brody will patch holes where old monitor was fixed.
25/6 Saturday
With reference to Email sent from Willy on Thursday the 23rd of June regarding M.V. Bruce entering into the QGC Safety Zone in order to proceed to the QC3 ramp while there is a Gas Ship alongside. Procedure is for Bruce to notify Trojan via VHF 63 of their intention and ask for clearance to proceed to the berth. Trojan to then notify the Loadmaster and the same procedure on departure. So far it does not seem necessary for Bruce to contact the Loadmaster directly by VHF 63 (as per procedure). I have spoken to the Loadmaster and he is satisfied with Trojan notifying him of Bruce's arrival & departure notice.
Message received that MSQ Gladstone has now received VTS accreditation from AMSA by way of a ‘VTS Authority Certificate for Queensland’. The VHF call sign has now changed from Gladstone Harbour Control to Gladstone VTS. You will now hear and need to use ‘Gladstone VTS’ as Gladstone MSQ’s official VHF call sign.
26/6 Sunday
PIN number set up for Trojan Boat Phone Voice Mail. PIN is 112233.
27/6 Monday
GPC entered GLNG WRZ and audited Apache then GPC entered QCLNG WRZ and audited Trojan. See full Interaction Record (submitted by Amanda) in Dave's Email dated 27th June at 13:42. Please delete this recording if you can or take to office to delete. Dave has saved the recording. I think you need a Samsung Phone with GoPro App to delete files?
28/6 Tuesday
Brody confirmed this morning that the new cable has been ordered to go from port Simrad NSS12 plotter/radar to external GPS antenna. He just has to book Gavin in from Modern Marine to come and fit the cable AND then check that AIS targets are visible on port Simrad NSS12 plotter/radar. Brody said he will attempt to secure anchor windlass the same day.
Noticed that the port tank room light is not working.
Inserted NAVIONICS micro SD (using Card adaptor) from New Simrad NSS9 into computer to register charts on-line and discovered the dealer 'Lowrance' Registered the card on 24th of November 2015. So therefore electronic charts are updated from this date. Tried to update charts on-line but not enough memory left on micro-SD unless I deleted some information and re-installed it but decided against this option. If Jake does this, we have until the 24th of November 2016 for the free updates that are available. The code for these electronic charts are shown on the card adaptor which is MSD/PLN50XG in case the adaptor goes missing.
Quick Start User Guide for SIMRAD NSS9 and micro SD card adaptor in zip lock bag in cardboard manual expandable folder under "S".
Have a good swing.
