Smoke-Free Workplace Policy

1.0   OBJECTIVE

Smoking and passive smoking can cause or contribute to many diseases, including lung cancer, ischemic heart disease, respiratory disease (including asthma) and emphysema.

Smoking anywhere inside a building significantly increases concentrations of tobacco smoke throughout the building, even if the windows are open, fans or filters are installed and doors to the smoking area are closed. Secondhand tobacco smoke contains toxins and carcinogens, and exposure can increase the risk of disease in non-smokers.

SeaLink Marine and Tourism (SeaLink) recognises the harmful effects of tobacco smoke, therefore has developed the following Policy to ensure the health of employees, contractors, customers and visitors and provide a healthy and pleasant environment for all.

2.0   POLICY

Smoking of tobacco and tobacco related products is prohibited on all SeaLink sites, including but not limited to buildings, structures, vessels*, vehicles and mobile plants.

Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas only, which shall be clearly marked and approved by the General Manager of the business.

The following rules also apply:

  • Employees are permitted to smoke during authorised breaks only
  • Tobacco products must be disposed of properly in cigarette bins provided
  • Employees shall take reasonable measures to ensure they do not smell of smoke when returning to their duties
  • The sale and promotion of tobacco and tobacco related products is not permitted on SeaLink sites or vessels.

Where SeaLink is a tenant or occupies space in a building or site owned or controlled by another organisation, employees, contractors, customers and visitors must also comply with the requirements of the site owner or controller.

* Smoking is permitted onboard some of our charter and cruise vessels such as MV Sydney 2000 and PS Murray Princess, which the Business Unit shall manage to ensure compliance by passengers and employees.

4.0   COMPLIANCE

Compliance with this Policy is a condition of employment, Managers and Supervisors are responsible for ensuring compliance with this policy for their area of responsibility.

Employees are responsible for ensuring contractors, customers and visitors are informed and comply with this Policy.

For breaches of this Policy, emphasis shall be on informal resolution and respectful communication of this policy, however, employees shall be aware that a breach of this Policy also breaches work health and safety legislation and tobacco control legislation. Repeated breaches may be managed under the appropriate disciplinary procedures.

5.0   SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE FOR EMPLOYEES

SeaLink will support and encourage employees to quit smoking by providing access to a range of information on tobacco smoke including passive smoking and the benefits of quitting, as well as provide access to products to help employees quit smoking.

6.0   REVIEW

This Policy applies to all SeaLink workplaces and will be regularly reviewed in light of developments, including changes to legislation and our understanding of best practice.
