IMS9.4.6.6.1 35m Work at Heights Procedure

1.0   PURPOSE

To ensure that SeaLink has a process to manage safe access to the 35m vessel work at heights area.

2.0   SCOPE

This Safe Work Procedure applies to all SeaLink personnel who will have to access the Work at Heights areas on the 35's.

4.0   DEFINITIONS

WAH – Work at Heights

5.0   REQUIREMENTS

5.1   Safety Awareness

5.1.1 Work at Heights has been identified as a high risk operation under Australian legislation. The 35m vessels have a requirement for personnel to access areas where there is a risk of falling from one level to another . This SWP covers specific requirements for this access.

5.1.2 Specific details on SeaLink Work at Heights requirements is to found in the Work at Heights Procedure IMS9.4.6.6

5.1.3 A Take 5 risk assessment  is to be completed for all Work at Heights activities. In the event that a risk is identified that is not covered in this SWP or the relating Safety Procedure.(See 5.1.2). An additional JSA is to be completed in accordance with  the relating Safety Procedure.(See 5.1.2).

5.1.4 SeaLink has deemed to following process to be suitable and sufficient for the task being undertaken and has assessed the risk to personnel who follow this process being acceptable. 

5.2   Training

Personnel required to access the vessels roof are to read and sign this document and the risk assessment demonstrating they understand the risk and requirements. Personnel will be given a practical demonstration before they undertake the task themselves.

5.3   Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

In addition to standard required PPE all personnel are to wear an approved WAH safety harness. The harness is to be donned before accessing Work at Heights areas

5.4   Access

Access is only to be gained by approved access points around the vessel. The process for connection to the WAH skyrail is as follows

  • Climb ladder
  • Move directly to the skyrail connection point..
  • Connect harness lanyard to the skyrail connection point.
  • Conduct task to be undertaken.

Note: no Work at Height tasks are to be undertaken on the vessel until the person is connected to the skyrail system.

5.5   Alighting Vessel Roof

Alighting the work at height areas is to be in reverse order off section 5.4

5.6   Emergency Response and Preparedness

In the event of an emergency the requirements of IMS9.4.7 Emergency Response and Preparedness are to be implemented.
